AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS UX
Reinventing wind turbine inspections for field operators with autonomous drone workflows (Acquired by SES Energy)
Improved operator task efficiency by 34%
CHALLENGE
Wind turbine blade inspections are slow, error-prone, and physically demanding. Operators manually control drones in harsh outdoor conditions, resulting in inconsistent photo capture, repeated flights, and unreliable inspection data.
MY TASK
Led the design of a Surface tablet application to automate DJI M300 drone inspection surveys, enabling operators to perform consistent, repeatable inspections and seamlessly sync captured data with the BladeInsight web platform.
KEY FOCUS AREAS
- Field user research & contextual observation
- Information architecture & workflow automation
- End-to-end UX & UI design (100+ high-fidelity screens)
- Outdoor-readability & accessibility design
- Cross-platform integration (tablet → web platform)
KEY RESULTS
- Increased inspection efficiency by up to 34%
- Reduced inspection errors and improved operator confidence
- Enabled potential annual savings of €1.4M across the client base through faster inspection surveys
Step 1 - Understanding real field conditions:
Step 2 - Research & safety-critical UI guidelines:
Step 3 - Workflow & information architecture:
Step 4 - Wireframes & prototyping:
Step 5 - Integration with BladeInsight platform:
Step 6 - Testing & iteration with operators.
CORE RESULT
My prototype transformed a manual piloting process into a repeatable inspection workflow operators could trust in real field conditions.
